Our last published romance novella was Yoanna by Sujeiry Gonzalez, the second steamy romance novel in her Heights of Love series. So now to amuse myself in a room full of strangers…

I feel a little awkward. Small talk has never been my strength. What am I supposed to say?

So…it’s a cold one out there? Ugh! No. So…how’s that Santa Stout taste? That’s weird. It would be so much easier if I could talk about something real! What are your hopes? Your fears? How did you get over…

“We meet again!” Dimples is back at the bar.

I smile. “We do!”

Come on, Sierra! Say something creative. “So, who are you here with and why do you keep getting stuck with the tab?!” I muster with a smile. Good enough line for the girl out of practice with both flirting and dating.

“My buddies over there,” he says, pointing his bottle of beer toward the other side of the room. “And you’re right! I should send one of them over. Cheapskates!”

He takes a swig of beer. “But then, I’d miss my chance to chat with you.” He winks in my direction.

I melt! I hold it together enough to softly eke out,”You’re too kind.”

Just then, the bartender turns up the music, so Dimples has to lean in closer to my ear and ask, “So, what’s your name? And what do you want to drink?”

“Sierra!” I shout back. “And I’ll have a mistletoe margarita. Thank you…”

“Simon,” he replies and then turns toward the crowded bar to order our drinks.

I quickly open my phone to text Belinda.

Girl! I just met…Before I can finish the text, Simon returns.

“One mistletoe margarita for the stunning Sierra,” he states as he hands me the drink. His fingers brush against mine. My heart pulsates.

“Thank you,” I manage to say, “And cheers!” I clink my glass against his.

“Cheers!” He maintains eye contact as he takes a sip of his beer. I feel my cheeks flush, but he doesn’t seem to notice the hint of red on my warm brown skin.

I assume he is heading back to his friends after the toast, but I notice he doesn’t have any other drinks. Is he really over here just to talk to…me?

“So Sierra, what are you doing here all alone?”

“Great question!” I start. “So did you know there are two Barrels and Brews?”

“Oh…”

“Yeah, so my best friend went to that location…and now I’m waiting for her to arrive.”

“That might be a while! It’s crazy out there! Is this your first SantaCon?”

“Definitely!” I say abruptly. “I’m not big on Christmas or costumes, but it makes my best friend happy, so here I am!”

“Well, you’re a good friend. And you did great with your costume.”

“This old thing?” I kid, softening in his presence. “Is this your first rodeo?”

“Nah! The guys and I have been doing this for years. But I might be about ready to hang up this hat,” he says, pulling on the Santa cap.

“And why is that?”

“Gets a little repetitive. I’m ready for a more chill vibe. Some food, drinks, and games…at home.”

“Same! I mean, maybe a red sweater or something but I don’t need all of this!” I wave my hand down my body implying that this entire look is just too much.

“Wait…did I hear you say you don’t like Christmas?!”

I freeze. Talking and flirting with this handsome stranger is going so well! And as much as I despise small talk and prefer to go deep, I don’t want to ruin this moment with that story.

“You did…” I reply.

I rack my brain for something to say without showing all my cards. Especially as I hear the sounds of George Michael crooning Last Christmas.

“Too commercial.” I finally blurt out. “I mean, have you seen those folks fighting over TVs on Black Friday?! And don’t get me started on how they are opening the stores on Thursday night now. And those workers have to leave their families early. It’s disgusting!” My response is as spicy as this margarita.

“I hear you,” he agrees. “That isn’t my favorite part of it either. But for me, there’s something about the tradition of it all.”

The conversation pivots and before I know it, we’ve swapped stories about friends, travel, and moving to New York. I can feel myself falling, but know I need to stay grounded. This might just be a fleeting moment. And then, the moment is interrupted.

“We’re heading to McSorley’s!” a tall Santa shouts in our direction at Simon.

No! He’s leaving.

“I’ll meet you there!” Simon shouts back, and then turns his attention to me.

“So Sierra, it seems like I’m being summoned.”

“So it seems.”

“You mind?” he asks, as he pulls the sprig of rosemary out of my empty margarita. I shake my head no, curious about what’s happening. He shakes the liquid off and then holds it above his head.

“Mistletoe?…” I whisper as a smile creeps across my face.

“Mistletoe,” he replies, eyebrows raised and eyes wide, asking the question I’d been longing for him to ask. I nod.

Belinda

Joseph’s words knock the wind out of me, along with a gust blowing in from the east. He waits for my response, a slow smile spreading across his face because, for the first time, I’m speechless.

“Cat got your tongue?” he whispers, his lips inches from mine.

“Meeeow!”

Joseph and I turn toward the drunken Santa facing us, totally stealing our moment and pretending to be a cat. When Santa begins licking his pretend paws, we burst into laughter.

“I have to meet Sierra. She’s probably sitting miserably in a corner surrounded by drunks and holiday music. It’s literally her nightmare. Her personal hell on Earth. So I can’t entertain this,” I wave my hands around his face, “right now.”

I spit it out quickly; otherwise, I’ll lose my nerve, forget my pride, and suck his face off right here in the middle of Times Square. God, I miss his succulent lips.

“Let’s go then.” Joseph grabs my hand, keeps me close, and leads the way. His broad shoulders move through the crowd, which parts for us like he’s Moses walking on water. My heart surges as we walk hand-in-hand, his words finally sinking in: he’s here for me.

“Where are you?!” I yell into the phone, over the sounds of Mariah Carey and rowdy partygoers in the background.

I barely hear my friend’s garbled voice as a very tipsy and very scantily clad “Mrs. Claus” tells an equally scantily clad reindeer about her run-in with a guy she used to date.

“Just text me!” I scream into the phone and hang up.

I don’t want to be here. I’m a bit of a Scrooge when it comes to Christmas. And I don’t really love dressing up and theme parties. It’s really a miracle I made it out of the house looking like an elf. That’s friendship for you! Only for my best friend would I leave my cozy couch, put on this get up, and brave the frigid December weather for SantaCon of all things.

I squeeze into an open spot by the corner of the bar and survey the room. I spot a group of friends taking turns screaming out toasts and clinking their Santa boot mugs together, erupting in raucous laughter. To the right of them, a Mr. and Mrs. Claus are cozied up in a booth having an intense conversation.

“And one for you!”

I turn back toward the bar and a cute guy, with killer dimples, shoves a candy cane test tube shot into my hand.

“Oh, no. I think you have the wrong person,” I reply.

“Well, I guess it’s your lucky day!” he winks and then passes out the rest of the shots to folks in the crowd behind me. And before I know it, he’s gone.

What the…What was that?

While I attempt to figure out what just happened, I toss back the shot. The vodka in the lemon drop warms my insides and I relax a little bit. I check my phone. Still nothing from Belinda, but I also notice I only have one flickering bar. And a quickly draining battery. I abandon my spot and migrate to a new one closer to the door to check my phone. I could just leave…but this bar is giving the vibe I know Belinda will love so I need to confirm she isn’t on the way.

I squeeze into a spot by the “snowy” window and open my phone again.

Girl. This location is wack!

Sierra, I’m on my way to you. Subway was packed so might be a minute. Don’t leave!

Well at least I know she is on the way. Because I would have been on my way back to my toasty apartment, out of this get up, and watching a true crime documentary.

Belinda

“Excuse me. Excuse me. Excuse me. MOVE!”

I shove past the drunken wannabe Santas the only way I know how: with force. Sierra has been waiting for me for hours. I’m usually late, so she’s used to it, but I still need to show up for my girl in case she gets accosted.

I love Christmas. And SantaCon has been on my Bucket List forever. (And yes, I love checking things off my Bucket List.) I finally convinced Sierra to get off her couch and hit the streets during the wildest, drunkest, most disorderly event in NYC… and I’m freaking late.

“She’ll forgive me,” I muse. “Everyone does!”

I smile, fully aware of my superpower: I always get my way. I don’t know if it’s my long, silky, fiery-red hair—thanks to my Irish side—or my wide hips—shoutout to my Puerto Rican ancestors—but people just fall at my feet.

“Shit!” I scream as my right foot gets squished by a pair of white Reeboks.

“My bad!”

I look up, ready to give the culprit who just murdered my pinky toe—already suffering in my red, pointed-toe stilettos—a piece of my mind, but instead I gasp.

“Joseph?” I whisper, squinting to make sure it’s really my ex. The one I dumped four weeks ago after a two-year long-distance relationship.

“Belinda.” His eyes twinkle, and suddenly I feel all tingly inside.

Nope. Not him. It’s because it’s 20 freaking degrees and I’m dressed like a slutty Mrs. Claus.

“SantaCon, huh? You finally convinced Sierra,” he chuckles, fully aware that my bestie is both risk-averse and Christmas-averse. “Where is she by the way?”

“Yup. I finally convinced the Scrooge to—”

“Watch out!” Joseph grabs me by the waist and pulls me tight as a gang of twenty-something Santas barrels through the crowd on bicycles.

“Use the bike lane, you assholes!” I scream after them, still wrapped in Joseph’s arms. His body shakes with laughter, his strong yet tender embrace reverberating through me.

“What are you doing here?” I ask.

“What? You’re the only one who can celebrate Christmas in the city?” He smiles sheepishly.

“You know what I mean, Jo. You live in Vegas. And you’re here. In NYC. Just like that.”

He tightens his hold on my waist, bends down, and brings his lips to my ear.

“Rockefeller Center, baby.”

I try to push away, annoyed by his jokes and his reference to 30 Rock, our favorite sitcom. He can’t take anything seriously. Reason number 2,000 why we broke up. But he pulls me in even tighter.

“You, Belinda,” he murmurs. “I’m here for you.”

“No.” I close my eyes, trying to reconnect to my power and ignore the heat rising inside me at the thought of him.

“I am stronger than this,” I say with conviction, willing the fire to cool.

Beep!

The sound of the intercom startles me. I pass Michael’s room, praying he’s still asleep. Thankfully, the soft hum of his white noise machine keeps him knocked out. I’ve used it since he was a baby to drown out the city noises.

Beep!

I rush to the kitchen intercom and press the button.

“Reina…babe…please…I have to see you…”

I let go of the button and close my eyes. This is what Peter does. He cheats and disappears to entertain his Ho of the Month, then shows up drunk when he’s had his fun. Promises to change, and we end up back in the same shitty cycle.

“I am chosen. I am worthy. I am enough as I am,” I repeat to myself.

Louder this time. “I am chosen. I am worthy. I am enough as I am!”

And then I scream it—fueled by the fury of a thousand scorned women.

“Mom?!”

I clap a hand over my mouth. “Sorry, papi! Go back to bed!”

Beep!

“Shit. This pendejo isn’t going to stop!”

I pick up my phone and text him, I’m coming down, before slipping into my white Reebok Classics. I grab my keys from the counter, tiptoe to the door, and lock it quietly behind me. As I turn the corner toward the stairs, my double D’s slam into a wall of muscle.

“Ay!” I yelp.

“Ay Dios! Reina, I’m so sorry! I didn’t see you!”

Domingo. Six feet tall, all muscle, and those deep chocolate eyes full of concern.

“It’s… okay…” I pant, cupping my breasts. They throb from the impact. I hear him grunting every evening after five, the weights he drops rattling our shared wall.

“Let me get you some ice,” he says, placing a hand on my waist to guide me toward his apartment.

“No…” I wince. “It’s fine. I have to deal with Peter.”

“Peter,” he repeats, his voice filled with disgust. “You deserve better.”

He closes the door behind us and steps closer. My back presses against it. He gazes into my hazel eyes, inches away, his rough mechanic’s fingertips tracing my cheek and lips.

He presses his chest gently against mine, careful not to hurt me further.

“I’ve always seen tu belleza…” he whispers, brushing his lips lightly against mine.

“Domingo, I…”

The words stick in my throat. I don’t want this feeling to end, even though I don’t want him. My mind drifts back to Peter waiting downstairs. I want him to make me feel this way.

I am chosen. I am worthy. I am enough just as I am, I repeat silently.

Domingo stands before me, eyes heavy with desire. His gaze devours every inch of me—sagging cheeks, wrinkles, love handles, grays, and all. I feel the fire return. A fire to be loved and wanted for exactly who I am.

I throw my arms around his neck, pull him in, and part my lips to let him in. Our hips grind together, and Domingo moans into my mouth, kissing me deeper.

On Thursday, the following week, Cam and I went on a date. I didn’t know if it was wearing something other than swimsuits, or the oppressive lights of the midtown Irish pub, but the energy between us didn’t feel quite as strong. This continued until the dusk turned to dawn and we both passed out from exhaustion.

A few hours later, the bright Sunday sun streamed into Cam’s bedroom. It was time to get up and go. He gave me a t-shirt that I pulled over my dress from the night before. My attempt to minimize my walk of shame look.

We stopped at the coffee shop for coffees and croissants before he walked me to the subway stop, where he left me with a parting kiss. I would have never guessed that would be our last.

Two days passed and…nothing. No communication from Cam. I decided to send a text checking in, to which he replied he was doing okay, but he didn’t ask any questions let alone for another date. It was odd, but I stayed optimistic. It was probably just a busy week. That happens, right?

Three more days passed.

Nothing.

I gave it one last attempt. My last stand. I called and left a cheerful, upbeat message. After two more days of being ignored, it finally sunk in.

My end of summer fling had fizzled…

By the time I finished my trip down memory lane, I was quickly wiping hot tears off my face so the cabbie didn’t ask any questions. Gratefully, we pulled up in front of my building soon after and I hurried out and into the comfort and quiet of my apartment. My sanctuary.

I still can’t believe I ran into Cam!

In the weeks since our last conversation, my heart had started to heal, yet again. I came to grips that he wasn’t my future husband, but that didn’t mean it didn’t sting to be rejected by someone I really liked. But beyond that, it was another reminder that, yet again, I was here starting over.

As I washed my party makeup off, I sighed. I realized this woman in the mirror, staring back at me, may not know how the love she deeply desires will find her, but she can rest knowing that somehow, someway, it will.

“Thank you!” I shouted over my shoulder to the bartender as I walked away from the bar. Double fisted, I held my gin and tonic and the bride-to-be’s rum and Coke as I carefully walked toward where Asia’s bachelorette crew had assembled. I was so focused on my destination that I didn’t notice the figure in front of me until I was inches away from smacking into him!

I looked up.

My heart thumped as loud as the bass of the music.

My eyes widened like saucers.

“Cam…?” I inquired, bewildered that it was actually him.

“Oh…hey…How are you, Brandy?” he asked, equally astonished.

“Uh, good…I’m good!” I stammered. “You?” I asked, unsure why. All I wanted to do was escape this conversation.

“Hanging in there.”

“Cool cool. Well, I need to get this drink over there.” I nodded my head in the direction of my friends. “Nice seeing you.”

I continued walking, picking up the pace, not waiting for his response.

Now why would I say that? It wasn’t nice seeing him! A few weeks ago it would have been a dream, but tonight…

When I approached the group, I plastered on a smile and passed the rum and Coke to Asia. Then, I sat down on the plush velvet couch. I took a big swig of my drink before grabbing my phone out of my clutch. The other partygoers were so occupied with drinking, dancing, and daring Asia to check things off her bingo card that they didn’t really notice me.

“Well,” I typed frantically to my best friend, Danielle. “You won’t believe the night I’ve had already…”

Danielle quickly responded to my text, “Aren’t you at a bachelorette party?”

“Yes! Night was going well and then I LITERALLY ran smack into Cam!”

“No! Are you for real?! What are the odds?! In all of New York?! I can’t even.”

“That part! I don’t even usually hang out in this part of town either. I would have never come to this bar if it wasn’t for the party.”

…

“Are you okay, B?”

My bestie knew me too well. I wasn’t sure if I was okay or not, but for now, I needed to get off my phone and power through for Asia. I sent one last text.

“I will be! Let me get back to this party. I will text you tomorrow.”

“Okay. Love you, B.”

“Love you, too, D.”

I chugged the rest of my drink, put on a happy face, and jumped back up to dance with the other women. I was determined to not let the run-in ruin my night. I had almost made it until I caught a glimpse of Cam cozied up with another woman across the lounge. It was then I knew I had to get out of there!

The bachelorette party was still in full swing. The good thing about a group of this size, and only really knowing the bachelorette, was that I could easily slip out without stopping the party. I made an excuse about a headache and then hightailed it out of the bar to hail a cab and head home.

It was only in the comfort of the back seat of the cab that I let quiet, hot tears fall.

I allowed myself to transport back to Labor Day weekend when I was on top of the world. It was my first Labor Day Weekend in Bliss Bay. According to my housemate, Melissa, it was the “best weekend all summer” and I was excited for the festivities!

That Saturday evening at the shrimp boil, Cam and I had reached for the same beer in the cooler, which led to us striking up a conversation that lasted until the wee hours of the morning. He walked me back to my house around 1 a.m. leaving only after we exchanged numbers, and had a juicy make out session! I was on cloud 9.

After a series of flirty texts throughout the next day, we decided to meet up that evening at one of the local bars, The Sand Dollar, where we shut down the dance floor. We sauntered our sweaty selves down to the beach where we cooled off with a naked dip in the cool, calm, salty water.

He needed to leave early that Monday, but agreed we would do the thing I had been warned to not do — meet up back in the city. On the ferry ride back that afternoon, Melissa warned me, “I mean, do what you want to do, girl, but I haven’t seen a case of ‘bringing the sand back from the beach’ ever working…”

Well, this is gonna be the exception not the rule!

“Open wide…wider!”

My mouth fills up, and I almost gag.

“Come on. Swallow!”

I take a big gulp and wince. Ugh. I hate chugging alcohol, even if it is Prosecco. Whose idea was it to get an ice luge shaped like a shot glass?

I wipe my mouth with the back of my hand just as George takes my other hand, pulling me against his solid chest.

“Good girl,” he whispers seductively, licking some Prosecco off my neck. His wet, warm tongue makes me shiver.

Oh, the things he can do with his tongue. That’s why I let him into my birthday party—despite Yoanna’s crossed arms and dagger-like glares. She hired security, told them to stick to the list, and insisted I take him off. I did. But when I saw him at the door—his chiseled jaw, five o’clock shadow, tan skin, broad shoulders, and those deep russet eyes—I caved. I grabbed him, ignoring Yo’s lethal stare, and pulled him through the crowd at the entrance. And now, here I am, ready to get devoured at Vivere.

“Come with me,” George says, leading the way. I follow close behind, my hand on his waist so I don’t lose him in the crowd. We weave through the party toward Vivere’s outdoor garden—still locked until summer.

“We can find another spot,” I say to him, pulling him away from the door.

“Ye of little faith.”

George goes into his pocket and reveals a pick. He inserts the pick into the lock and wiggles it around to open the door.

“What are you doing?” I squeal, glancing over my shoulder and praying no one noticed.

“Live a little.”

Click. He pushes the door open, grabs my hand, and pulls me into the darkness of the garden. The door shuts behind us. I can’t see a thing, but I can feel everything—my heart pounding, adrenaline surging, his large, masculine hands gripping my waist, and the cold brick wall pressing against my back.

“Now,” George growls in my ear, his warm breath on my skin setting me abaze. “Open wide, birthday girl.”

He spreads my legs with his own, commanding and sure. His hand glides from my waist, past my belly button, until it finds the aching pulse between my thighs. George is always in full control. I hate it and love it all at once.

My eyes flutter open, blinded by a sudden beam of light. George, focused on one thing and one thing only, doesn’t even acknowledge the man standing in front of us.

“George,” I breathe, my voice unsteady. “Stooop… oh—stop.”

He chuckles darkly. “Let him watch,” he says, still determined to finish what he started.

“NYPD! Hands where I can see them. Step away from the lady—now.”

George takes a step back, runs his wet, sticky fingers through his hair, and smirks. “Officer.”

I stare in horror as he’s handcuffed, and a second officer approaches me.

“Hands behind your back,” she commands.

“Wait—what?!” I cry, my eyes filling with tears. “Ma’am… officer… it’s my birthday, and, you know, things got a little crazy. We were just having fun! We didn’t hurt anyone!”

“You trespassed on private property. Picked a lock. That’s illegal,” the male officer states flatly.

Tears stream down my cheeks as the female officer cuffs me. The male officer leads George toward the exit. Just before they disappear through the gate, George glances back at me with those intense, bad-boy eyes and grins.

“Happy birthday, Candi.”

“Now where…is it?” I mumbled as I dug around in the back of my closet. I reached into a department store bag and my fingertips grazed the netted material. There! I pulled the item out with a flourish. It was my navy blue fascinator that I’d purchased on a trip to London. I knew it would eventually come in handy back here in the States! I was headed to a bar for a Derby party with my cousin, Gabby, and her boyfriend, Dev.

As much as I adore my cousin and think her boyfriend is tons of fun, I had grown weary of my status as the third wheel, so I was making an exception. I didn’t want to spend another Saturday night, sulking on my couch, drowning my sorrows, and, one of G’s clients was hosting the exclusive event at an incredible rooftop downtown and I couldn’t resist!

I checked my clock. Eep! I needed to get moving. I pulled on the fun floral dress I’d purchased for the occasion and adjusted the fascinator to not disrupt my voluminous curls. I gave myself a look in the mirror. I see you, girl! I looked good and reminded myself as such. Then, I spritzed some of my favorite perfume, stepped into my stilettos, grabbed my purse, and was out the door, on my way, and feeling good. It was definitely the energy I wanted to take into the party after being in a bit of a winter funk…and drought. I mean, it wasn’t my usual crew or stomping grounds, so the opportunity was ripe for me to meet a handsome and successful stranger watching the race! I could feel the potential in the warm, spring air...

I stepped out of the cab in front of the hot spot, where a line had formed. Given the weather, it was no surprise! I immediately saw Gabby and Dev. They both greeted me with hugs before Gabby ushered us past the line. We took an elevator up to the 12th floor.

When the doors opened, it was like stepping into a little piece of paradise! The expansive space had a modern, sleek lounge vibe. Crisp white couches mixed in with high top tables. Three long bars, each decorated with bouquets of red roses in honor of the event. Those same flowers adorned the photo stations where professional photographers were taking snapshots. A few large TVs showing pre-race coverage were sprinkled throughout. This was magical!

“Thanks for inviting me, G! This is amazing!”

“Of course, of course! Now let’s get some drinks!”

Before we could reach the bar, a server passed by with a tray of elegant flutes filled with bubbly, a favorite for both me and Gabby. We all took a glass and toasted to the evening.

When moments later Gabby’s boss approached, I took that as my opportunity to explore.

“I’ll be back!” I gave her and Dev a wave and walked toward a corner of the bar where I’d seen some activity. There, a gentleman was helping guests place their bets.

“$20 per bet. You’ll randomly draw a slip from this bowl with a horse’s name and hope for the best!” he exclaimed. “Anyone with the winning horse’s name will split the winnings.”

I reached into my purse to find my wallet and a $20 when I felt a presence behind me.

“I’ll take 5,” the voice declared.

I looked up from my purse and now saw the voice’s hand as he handed a folded bill to the gentleman. I followed the hand up the arm and to the face. There was a beautiful specimen of a man with a megawatt smile. I felt myself staring, so I quickly smiled back. “Hi…”

He nodded, “Hi to you, too. I guess we have to pick out these horse’s, huh?”

I’d forgotten about the horses. “Oh yeah. Let’s see!” Damn. My flirting skills are rusty!

He nodded for me to go. I reached into the bowl and pulled out ‘Ascendance.’ He pulled out his 5, which included the same horse. Was the Universe finally throwing me a bone?

“Guess I better cheer extra for Ascendance,” he remarked with a wink.

“I guess so,” I answered. “I mean…if we’re going to be winners, I should know your name, right?” I batted my eyelashes.

“Carter,“ he answered as he offered his hand.

“Brandy.” His touch sent a little tingle down my spine. After all the time it took to get over my ex plus the long, cold, lonely winter, it was nice to feel a little spark.

“Nice to meet you, Brandy. I have to head back over to my friends, but I owe you a drink with our winnings.”

“Sounds good.”

I walked back toward Gabby and Dev trying to get my heart to beat back at its normal pace.

“B! Where’d you sneak off to?” Gab asked as she handed me a mint julep.

“Oh…just over there. Placing my bet!” I held up the slip of paper.

“Fun!” Gabby turned toward Dev. “Babe, can you get us a few?”

“Absolutely!” He gave her a peck on the lips and then walked toward the betting station.

“You were gone a little long, missy!” Gabby knew me far too well. .

“Yeah well…” I took a sip of the drink as I widened my eyes.

“Spill it!”

“Okay so don’t be obvious, but there’s a guy over there,” I nodded my head in the direction of where Carter was now chatting it up with his friends. “Gray suit, pink tie.”

Gabby looked in the direction and clearly spotted Carter by the pleased look on her face. “Very nice. Very nice. So what did he say? What’s the game plan?”

“I mean, it was quick, but he did say when our horse wins he owes me a drink so…that seems like a good sign!”

“Indeed. Indeed.”

Over the course of the next hour or so, Carter and I would steal glances and smiles across the busy bar. Before too long, it was time for the big race! Everyone in the bar crowded around the TVs and cheered for their respective horses.

“Come on Ascendance!” I shouted at the TV.

In the “fastest two minutes in sports,” also known as the slowest two minutes of my life, Ascendance ended up losing…by a nose! Almost, but not quite. Which would also be my experience with Carter. As I turned around to where I’d last seen him and his friends, I caught a glimpse of his back, in that damn sexy gray suit, as he and his friends departed through the doors to somewhere else in the city.

Sigh…I felt a slight tinge of disappointment. But I was no stranger to the disappointment of short lived crushes. But as the Manhattan sky faded from daylight to dusk, I decided to see the positive. Carter wouldn’t be my next great love, but at least I felt like it was possible to connect with a man again. And maybe I was actually, and finally, over Justin. The rest of my evening and summer awaited, so maybe it was time to stop horsing around, saddle up, and bet on me finding real love.
