On Thursday, the following week, Cam and I went on a date. I didn’t know if it was wearing something other than swimsuits, or the oppressive lights of the midtown Irish pub, but the energy between us didn’t feel quite as strong. Our conversation struggled as I realized we didn’t have much in common. Not music. Not movies. Not TV. Even our goodnight kiss didn’t have the same spark as those first smooches under the moonlight in Bliss Bay. Maybe Melissa was right.

Never one to not give it my all, I chalked it up to being tired and asked him what he was doing the following Saturday…

That night, over dinner, I was encouraged! The conversation flowed more and I didn’t feel quite as awkward. We kept the night going at karaoke and then a cocktail bar.

See! Nothing for me to worry about!

By the time we wrapped up, it was after 2 a.m. I was a little tipsy, and a lot tired, so it made sense to go back to Cam’s place since it was closer than mine. There, things heated up, which gave me a second wind! I relished the kisses, which seemed to reclaim our previous magic, as he planted them on me from head to toe, with plenty of attention to my nether regions. My entire body tingled. This continued until the dusk turned to dawn and we both passed out from exhaustion.

A few hours later, the bright Sunday sun streamed into Cam’s bedroom. It was time to get up and go. He gave me a t-shirt that I pulled over my dress from the night before. My attempt to minimize my walk of shame look.

We stopped at the coffee shop for coffees and croissants before he walked me to the subway stop, where he left me with a parting kiss. I would have never guessed that would be our last.

Two days passed and…nothing. No communication from Cam. I decided to send a text checking in, to which he replied he was doing okay, but he didn’t ask any questions let alone for another date. It was odd, but I stayed optimistic. It was probably just a busy week. That happens, right?

Three more days passed.

Nothing.

I gave it one last attempt. My last stand. I called and left a cheerful, upbeat message. After two more days of being ignored, it finally sunk in.

My end of summer fling had fizzled…

By the time I finished my trip down memory lane, I was quickly wiping hot tears off my face so the cabbie didn’t ask any questions. Gratefully, we pulled up in front of my building soon after and I hurried out and into the comfort and quiet of my apartment. My sanctuary.

I still can’t believe I ran into Cam!

In the weeks since our last conversation, my heart had started to heal, yet again. I came to grips that he wasn’t my future husband, but that didn’t mean it didn’t sting to be rejected by someone I really liked. But beyond that, it was another reminder that, yet again, I was here starting over.

As I washed my party makeup off, I sighed. I realized this woman in the mirror, staring back at me, may not know how the love she deeply desires will find her, but she can rest knowing that somehow, someway, it will.

“Thank you!” I shouted over my shoulder to the bartender as I walked away from the bar. Double fisted, I held my gin and tonic and the bride-to-be’s rum and Coke as I carefully walked toward where Asia’s bachelorette crew had assembled. I was so focused on my destination that I didn’t notice the figure in front of me until I was inches away from smacking into him!

I looked up.

My heart thumped as loud as the bass of the music.

My eyes widened like saucers.

“Cam…?” I inquired, bewildered that it was actually him.

“Oh…hey…How are you, Brandy?” he asked, equally astonished.

“Uh, good…I’m good!” I stammered. “You?” I asked, unsure why. All I wanted to do was escape this conversation.

“Hanging in there.”

“Cool cool. Well, I need to get this drink over there.” I nodded my head in the direction of my friends. “Nice seeing you.”

I continued walking, picking up the pace, not waiting for his response.

Now why would I say that? It wasn’t nice seeing him! A few weeks ago it would have been a dream, but tonight…

When I approached the group, I plastered on a smile and passed the rum and Coke to Asia. Then, I sat down on the plush velvet couch. I took a big swig of my drink before grabbing my phone out of my clutch. The other partygoers were so occupied with drinking, dancing, and daring Asia to check things off her bingo card that they didn’t really notice me.

“Well,” I typed frantically to my best friend, Danielle. “You won’t believe the night I’ve had already…”

Danielle quickly responded to my text, “Aren’t you at a bachelorette party?”

“Yes! Night was going well and then I LITERALLY ran smack into Cam!”

“No! Are you for real?! What are the odds?! In all of New York?! I can’t even.”

“That part! I don’t even usually hang out in this part of town either. I would have never come to this bar if it wasn’t for the party.”

…

“Are you okay, B?”

My bestie knew me too well. I wasn’t sure if I was okay or not, but for now, I needed to get off my phone and power through for Asia. I sent one last text.

“I will be! Let me get back to this party. I will text you tomorrow.”

“Okay. Love you, B.”

“Love you, too, D.”

I chugged the rest of my drink, put on a happy face, and jumped back up to dance with the other women. I was determined to not let the run-in ruin my night. I had almost made it until I caught a glimpse of Cam cozied up with another woman across the lounge. It was then I knew I had to get out of there!

The bachelorette party was still in full swing. The good thing about a group of this size, and only really knowing the bachelorette, was that I could easily slip out without stopping the party. I made an excuse about a headache and then hightailed it out of the bar to hail a cab and head home.

It was only in the comfort of the back seat of the cab that I let quiet, hot tears fall.

I allowed myself to transport back to Labor Day weekend when I was on top of the world. It was my first Labor Day Weekend in Bliss Bay. According to my housemate, Melissa, it was the “best weekend all summer” and I was excited for the festivities!

That Saturday evening at the shrimp boil, Cam and I had reached for the same beer in the cooler, which led to us striking up a conversation that lasted until the wee hours of the morning. He walked me back to my house around 1 a.m. leaving only after we exchanged numbers, and had a juicy make out session! I was on cloud 9.

After a series of flirty texts throughout the next day, we decided to meet up that evening at one of the local bars, The Sand Dollar, where we shut down the dance floor. We sauntered our sweaty selves down to the beach where we cooled off with a naked dip in the cool, calm, salty water.

He needed to leave early that Monday, but agreed we would do the thing I had been warned to not do — meet up back in the city. On the ferry ride back that afternoon, Melissa warned me, “I mean, do what you want to do, girl, but I haven’t seen a case of ‘bringing the sand back from the beach’ ever working…”

Well, this is gonna be the exception not the rule!

“Now where…is it?” I mumbled as I dug around in the back of my closet. I reached into a department store bag and my fingertips grazed the netted material. There! I pulled the item out with a flourish. It was my navy blue fascinator that I’d purchased on a trip to London. I knew it would eventually come in handy back here in the States! I was headed to a bar for a Derby party with my cousin, Gabby, and her boyfriend, Dev.

As much as I adore my cousin and think her boyfriend is tons of fun, I had grown weary of my status as the third wheel, so I was making an exception. I didn’t want to spend another Saturday night, sulking on my couch, drowning my sorrows, and, one of G’s clients was hosting the exclusive event at an incredible rooftop downtown and I couldn’t resist!

I checked my clock. Eep! I needed to get moving. I pulled on the fun floral dress I’d purchased for the occasion and adjusted the fascinator to not disrupt my voluminous curls. I gave myself a look in the mirror. I see you, girl! I looked good and reminded myself as such. Then, I spritzed some of my favorite perfume, stepped into my stilettos, grabbed my purse, and was out the door, on my way, and feeling good. It was definitely the energy I wanted to take into the party after being in a bit of a winter funk…and drought. I mean, it wasn’t my usual crew or stomping grounds, so the opportunity was ripe for me to meet a handsome and successful stranger watching the race! I could feel the potential in the warm, spring air...

I stepped out of the cab in front of the hot spot, where a line had formed. Given the weather, it was no surprise! I immediately saw Gabby and Dev. They both greeted me with hugs before Gabby ushered us past the line. We took an elevator up to the 12th floor.

When the doors opened, it was like stepping into a little piece of paradise! The expansive space had a modern, sleek lounge vibe. Crisp white couches mixed in with high top tables. Three long bars, each decorated with bouquets of red roses in honor of the event. Those same flowers adorned the photo stations where professional photographers were taking snapshots. A few large TVs showing pre-race coverage were sprinkled throughout. This was magical!

“Thanks for inviting me, G! This is amazing!”

“Of course, of course! Now let’s get some drinks!”

Before we could reach the bar, a server passed by with a tray of elegant flutes filled with bubbly, a favorite for both me and Gabby. We all took a glass and toasted to the evening.

When moments later Gabby’s boss approached, I took that as my opportunity to explore.

“I’ll be back!” I gave her and Dev a wave and walked toward a corner of the bar where I’d seen some activity. There, a gentleman was helping guests place their bets.

“$20 per bet. You’ll randomly draw a slip from this bowl with a horse’s name and hope for the best!” he exclaimed. “Anyone with the winning horse’s name will split the winnings.”

I reached into my purse to find my wallet and a $20 when I felt a presence behind me.

“I’ll take 5,” the voice declared.

I looked up from my purse and now saw the voice’s hand as he handed a folded bill to the gentleman. I followed the hand up the arm and to the face. There was a beautiful specimen of a man with a megawatt smile. I felt myself staring, so I quickly smiled back. “Hi…”

He nodded, “Hi to you, too. I guess we have to pick out these horse’s, huh?”

I’d forgotten about the horses. “Oh yeah. Let’s see!” Damn. My flirting skills are rusty!

He nodded for me to go. I reached into the bowl and pulled out ‘Ascendance.’ He pulled out his 5, which included the same horse. Was the Universe finally throwing me a bone?

“Guess I better cheer extra for Ascendance,” he remarked with a wink.

“I guess so,” I answered. “I mean…if we’re going to be winners, I should know your name, right?” I batted my eyelashes.

“Carter,“ he answered as he offered his hand.

“Brandy.” His touch sent a little tingle down my spine. After all the time it took to get over my ex plus the long, cold, lonely winter, it was nice to feel a little spark.

“Nice to meet you, Brandy. I have to head back over to my friends, but I owe you a drink with our winnings.”

“Sounds good.”

I walked back toward Gabby and Dev trying to get my heart to beat back at its normal pace.

“B! Where’d you sneak off to?” Gab asked as she handed me a mint julep.

“Oh…just over there. Placing my bet!” I held up the slip of paper.

“Fun!” Gabby turned toward Dev. “Babe, can you get us a few?”

“Absolutely!” He gave her a peck on the lips and then walked toward the betting station.

“You were gone a little long, missy!” Gabby knew me far too well. .

“Yeah well…” I took a sip of the drink as I widened my eyes.

“Spill it!”

“Okay so don’t be obvious, but there’s a guy over there,” I nodded my head in the direction of where Carter was now chatting it up with his friends. “Gray suit, pink tie.”

Gabby looked in the direction and clearly spotted Carter by the pleased look on her face. “Very nice. Very nice. So what did he say? What’s the game plan?”

“I mean, it was quick, but he did say when our horse wins he owes me a drink so…that seems like a good sign!”

“Indeed. Indeed.”

Over the course of the next hour or so, Carter and I would steal glances and smiles across the busy bar. Before too long, it was time for the big race! Everyone in the bar crowded around the TVs and cheered for their respective horses.

“Come on Ascendance!” I shouted at the TV.

In the “fastest two minutes in sports,” also known as the slowest two minutes of my life, Ascendance ended up losing…by a nose! Almost, but not quite. Which would also be my experience with Carter. As I turned around to where I’d last seen him and his friends, I caught a glimpse of his back, in that damn sexy gray suit, as he and his friends departed through the doors to somewhere else in the city.

Sigh…I felt a slight tinge of disappointment. But I was no stranger to the disappointment of short lived crushes. But as the Manhattan sky faded from daylight to dusk, I decided to see the positive. Carter wouldn’t be my next great love, but at least I felt like it was possible to connect with a man again. And maybe I was actually, and finally, over Justin. The rest of my evening and summer awaited, so maybe it was time to stop horsing around, saddle up, and bet on me finding real love.

Must be love on the brainnnnn…that’s got me feeling this way…

I paused mid bite. The warmth and sweetness of the bread pudding permeated my mouth. I hadn’t noticed the song until now as the bartender turned up the volume. My pineapple rum cocktail washed down the bread pudding, but couldn’t wash away the forlorn feelings that started to form as I thought about what was…and now wasn’t. The sting was even more prevalent as I sat at the bar solo. Despite my initial excitement to try out a solo date, at that moment, it just felt a little…sad. I had instantly been transported back several years when everything I thought to be true came crashing down…

Life had been fantastic! I was twenty-five and on top of the world. I had a job I loved with lots of potential for promotion and progress. I had my first apartment on my own that I adored. And I was happily in love with Isaiah.

We’d met at a bar the year before and quickly found ourselves in a relationship. I admit, I was hesitant to date another athlete after my college relationship crashed and burned, but I figured we were both grown now and those youthful indiscretions wouldn’t be a thing. For that, I was correct. He didn’t care to sow his wild oats anymore. He wanted to be committed. And committed we were! We had just started a few talks about potentially moving in together later in the year when our leases were up. I just knew we were going to be the next Barack and Michelle! (Well, the version that was an accountant and a journalist.)

And then, it all changed.

The song had also changed.

Hey I heard you were a wild one…ooooohhhh ooooooohhh ooohhh ooohhh…

It hadn’t helped change my mood. Even the up-tempo songs of summer reminded me of us, like our carefree moments on the dance floor when things were good. And, of course, our ultimate demise…

That enthusiasm soon faded as we resumed talks about the potential move in. When we started to get more in depth about finances, I could feel the shift.

I thought he would take some time, come to his senses, and we’d move forward. But he didn’t. Couldn’t. Wouldn’t. And so I had to let the dream go.

After that, I didn’t have the desire or energy to pursue anything serious. And so I didn’t. And then I met Marcus, my on-again, off-again, friend with benefits. We were off-again, and that’s how I ended up at this bar with my dessert and cocktail on a solo date not expecting to traipse down memory lane.

By the time I’d returned to the present, I was grateful that the bartender had changed his playlist to something more vintage. Classic love songs that didn’t remind me of the love I’d lost, but instead the hope of the love I was still determined to find. One day. And so I decided in that moment to take a deep breath, focus on my future, and love myself just a little bit more.

I clicked on the overhead light as the main cabin lights went dim. I was cozy and settled in for the remaining 3 hours of the flight with my Woodford Reserve in hand when I opened up the copy of All Fours by Miranda July that Kendall had sent with me. 

“I think you’ll really enjoy it!” she’d said. “A real honest and refreshing take on being mid 40s.” 

It took all my strength to hold my tongue and not burst out, “I’m still in my early 40s!” to her. Sensitive much?  

The book was…different. Intriguing. The character’s life being so different from my own. But I was able to find some commonality as she shared about her female friendships and a general sense of ennui with her 40 something life. As I flipped the page, I saw a graphic that depicted how a woman’s hormones change somewhere and sometime in her 40s. It looked like, and as the character alluded to, falling right off a cliff. 

And in that moment, hot tears pricked at my eyes. 

What the…why the hell was I crying…now? Was it the hormones? Was it the realization that my child bearing years were quickly evaporating in front of me? Was my body going to betray me and render me invisible and undesirable before I found a worthy partner and I had no real prospect in sight? I was, yet again, starting over, fresh off a break up (and a subsequent rebound that was only temporarily satisfying) and returning to a life of uncertainty. Meanwhile, my baby brother was getting married. It was gut wrenching. I could only imagine the commentary that awaited me at all of these functions…

I brushed away the tears before they fell and stained my face. I was grateful the lights were dimmed and the man in the aisle seat had nodded off. I sighed. Maybe it was actually time to unthaw those eggs I’d put on ice so many years ago…

I opened the Reminders app on my phone and typed “Dr. appt” so I wouldn’t forget to schedule an appointment with the gynecologist now that I was headed back to the states. Doing something felt like a step toward unraveling the jumbled ball of emotions inside me. 

I couldn’t keep reading. And I wouldn’t allow my thoughts to drift back to my circumstances. I needed to do something different to pass the time. Maybe I’d allow myself the treat of mindless scrolling. I clicked a few buttons to purchase wifi for my flight. 

Was this phone reading my mind? After scrolling through funny memes, places to eat in various cities, and random posts of friends, I came across a post that stopped me in my tracks. 

I paused to consider this idea. Maybe things weren’t upside down. Maybe the path just was winding in a new way toward something more meant for me. Maybe. 

I don’t know that I’m quite ready for my next chapter yet, but maybe I can just believe in my ability to be patient, trust the process, and trust myself.

“Maybe we can be each other's soulmates. And then we could just let men be these great, nice guys to have fun with!”

As a long time fan and binge watcher of Sex and the City, I love this quote from Charlotte. For much of my life, I was never the girl getting the attention of all the guys. I mean - I didn’t even have my first boyfriend until I was in college! Then, throughout my twenties, I survived more than a handful of short-lived, short term relationships that left me sad and brokenhearted. And after one particularly devastating experience, I turned, yet again, to one of my favorite comfort shows, and this time the episode and the quote just hit different. So much so that I immediately called up my cousin, Gabby. 

Gabby is amazing, y’all! A few years older than me, she’s always been more like a big sister and the first person I go to for all things relationships. And while she’s had her share of ups and downs, she’s always been a hopeless romantic and lover of love. Before she even said it, I could hear her voice in my head, “Like I always say, B. Just because you don’t happen to have a man at the moment, doesn’t mean you don’t have an abundance of love!” 

She was right, of course! I had plenty of love and already had my crew of soulmates and besties, including her. So in honor of that conversation and Valentine’s Day, I decided to interview Gab and share more about what we’ve learned about one of our favorite types of love. The love we share with our gal pals! Brandy: Hey Gab! 

Gabby: Hey B! Excited for our chat. 

Brandy: Me too! Okay. I’m sure you remember that night I called you. 

Gabby: Oh do I…after the JJ incident? 

Brandy: Girl…that’s the one. I’ve come a long way! 

Gabby: Surely! 

Brandy: So, tell me more about this idea of love of friends, or friends as soulmates.When did the concept of that first resonate with you? 

Gabby: Yeah! So, it definitely took me a while to learn it. I think that is just part of the journey for many women. We’re fed so many things from society about romantic love. First of all, we really are tricked into thinking it’s supposed to look like a Disney movie. 

Brandy: Just played! I mean, could I roll my eyes any harder! 

Gabby: Seriously! So it is really made out to be the priority. And not that there's anything wrong with desiring or having a partner. It’s just, we miss something when that’s all we focus on! I mean, imagine what it would have looked like to see Jasmine supported by some homegirls when Aladdin was acting up. 

Brandy: I can’t with you! 

Gabby: But for real though. Anyway. Back to my journey. It was at the end of college. I was leaving Howard and going to Emory for law school and also breaking up with my college boyfriend, Craig. It was excruciating! But that was really when my friendship with Amaya got even stronger. I mean, she was picking me up off the floor when I was hysterically crying. And going with me to his place to pick up my stuff. Given I’m an only child, and you were only, what, 15 at the time…and I just didn’t want to admit what I thought of as failure to my mom, I really had to rely on my friend. 

Brandy: Yeah. That also makes me think about my bestie, Danielle, and the many times she and I would real talk about life. 

Gabby: Exactly! And that definitely was not the last time! But what I learned through that is that I could be me, vulnerably. I didn’t have to be strong for Amaya. I could be as messy as I felt. That was really one of the first times I learned that. 

Brandy: What else do you think contributed to you building these relationships?  

Gabby: I think a crucial part has been finding ways to stay connected even as our lives changed. I think one of the more significant changes was when my bestie had a baby! I was thrilled! Being Auntie Gab is such a treat, but…you know her time is different raising a little one. So we have found ways to make it work. And we get that life gets busy and give each other grace! Because while she’s raising a little, I’m often traveling abroad and on other time zones so we just figure it out. We will schedule FaceTimes but we also love Marco Polo. We can send videos but check in when we have time. 

Brandy: That makes sense. I know there were shifts for me when some of my friends got married or moved out of state. But same. We’ve found our way. My girls and I swear by our group chat! 

Gabby: You and your group chat! Yes! I love how you all communicate from all across the country and support each other. 

Brandy: Yes! What else would you recommend? 

Gabby: Take a vacay together! You may not be able to do it every year, but I really think you should prioritize that. Just to be away from the day to day and really get that time you had like you were younger. We take for granted, especially with our college friends, just how much time we spent together!  

Brandy: I know! Danielle and I talk about that all the time. 

Gabby: Clearly that has financial implications, so if you can’t do that, prioritize your girls nights if you are in town together. Or get creative with your virtual girls nights! 

Brandy: Oh yeah! Me and the group chat girls did that. We all wanted to rewatch Insecure, so we would get on Zoom together, have our drinks, watch the episodes, and chat while watching. Not quite the same, but something to keep us connected.

Brandy: So as we think about Valentine’s Day coming up, what’s your best advice to all the ladies out there who may be a little down about the holiday?

Gabby: Sure! Girl. Romanticize your own life. Love on your girlfriends. They’ve been around long before these men. Most of who will come and go! There is so much love in your life and truly really celebrate that. Who needs Valentine’s Day when you have Galentine’s Day?!

After a harsh, snowy winter, a very rainy spring, and a recently fizzled fling, I was in desperate need of some stress free summer fun. Especially now that the nights were warmer and I could show up and show off my well toned physique in a sundress. 

Whether it was fate or good fortune, I won a free happy hour at this midtown Irish pub, where I now find myself, seated at a table of nine attractive men on this balmy Thursday evening in June. While twenty of my best friends finish their free cocktails, I sit with my legs crossed in the direction of the gorgeous, godlike man next to me. As he tells me about his life as an ER resident, I sip my gin and tonic as I flip my curls over my shoulder and wondered who The Doctor will prove to be in my life.

Now how did I end up at this table, ignoring his other handsome friends, and staring into his sparkling brown eyes, admiring his deep olive skin? Blame it on the al-al-al-al-al-alcohol! The two G&Ts I downed before this one to be exact. I had just started my third one, when my friends and I had snagged the table next to his to sit for a bit and scope out the scene. A double dog dare from my friend, Nisha, and a few more ounces of liquid confidence and there I was, on my feet, sauntering over to the table. There was an empty seat between him and another guy. I took that as my invitation to slide in. 

“Hi! I’m Brandy!” I extend my hand to shake his. He introduces himself, and the assortment of guys around the table, to me, but my gaze and attention is only for him. 

“So what brings you here tonight?” I ask. 

“I actually have a night off!” he exclaims as he runs his fingers through his lush, dark hair. “And hadn’t seen these guys in a while.”

He tells me about growing up on Long Island, undergrad and med school upstate, and returning to the city for his residency. I disclose how I was pre-med for a hot second before organic chemistry rocked my world and how my current career in Corporate Social Responsibility isn’t necessarily life changing, but that I enjoy it. 

“Your work sounds really meaningful though. It’s helping people and communities. Just in a different way.” He lightly rests his hand on top of mine. 

Swoon! I feel flutters in my belly. I forget that anyone else exists in the room.

We continue to talk about a little of everything - being the youngest siblings in our families, Giants v. Eagles, and hot takes on the best (and worst) New York City neighborhoods. As the minutes turn into hours, I’m completely enthralled. In my head, I start to check off all the boxes he meets on my mental list-of-what-I want-in-a-guy. 

“We’re out!” One of the Guys comes over, interrupting our blissful conversation. “Come to Matt’s place.”

Nooooo. I scream on the inside. I don’t want our time to end! Damn this guy and damn Matt. Whoever he is! 

“Okay. I’ll text you.” I can tell by the look he gives his friend that he wants to stay and isn’t in a rush. Relief! The friend departs into the crowd. 

Oh snap! I don’t even know where my friends are right now. I’ve completely abandoned them for The Doctor. At that moment, Nisha comes up. 

“You good?” she asks, her eyebrow raised as she looks at The Doctor letting him know she is not one to be played with when it comes to her friends. But then quickly follows with a wink as looks at me. She can see where this is going. 

“All good! Thanks, Nish!”

“Okay girl,” she says, giving me a quick kiss on the cheek. “Text me when you get home.” She also fades into the crowd. 

“Another drink?” he asks. 

“Sure!” I reply. 

Tingles run down my spine as he gently places his hand on the small of my back and guides me toward the bar. While waiting for our drinks, the music and the mood shift.

We grab our drinks and he grabs my hand to lead me to the dance floor where he spins me around and pulls me in close. I can feel his breath on my neck as our bodies move to the beat of the music…Sigh…I’m a smitten kitten! As one sexy song transitions to another, he spins me back around so I’m facing him.  

Ba-dum.

Ba-dum.

Ba-dum. 

My heart races. I think he’s going to kiss me. 

He gently releases his hand from mine and places it on my cheek. He leans in, and places his soft, warm, beer-laced lips on mine. I melt! We dance and drink and kiss for the next few songs before plopping down on two bar stools in a shady corner. 

He takes out his iPhone, opens to his contacts page, and hands me the phone to enter my details, which I do gladly. I send a text to my number so I have his digits locked in. I hold up the phone to show him what I typed. 

He chuckles. “Oh okay, Brandy, best kisser in New York City.”

“Am I lying though?” I ask slyly with a bat of my eyelashes. He leans in for another kiss before answering, “Nope.” 

“Did you read the rest?” I give his knee a squeeze. 

“Oh I did. And I will.”

I don’t want it to end, but my alarm is set for five hours from now and I really need to get home. I guess I can keep him waiting. 

“Shall we?”

“Yup.” 

He clasps my hand and leads me toward the door. We walk out of the dark bar and into the bright lights of the big city.  A light, summer breeze tickles my skin as we watch for the white lights of an available cab, which he promptly hails for me. As the cab approaches, he can’t resist kissing me goodbye one more time.  

As I finally climb into bed after my nightly routine at home, I pick up my phone and see a new message. From him! A smile creeps across my face and I read below the “I can’t wait to take you out this weekend” message I wrote from his phone. 

“So how’s Saturday night?”

And as my head hits the pillow, I dream only of a world of possibilities with me and the Doctor.

“So why didn’t you go out for the bouquet toss?”

“What about that groomsman? He seems nice.”

“I can’t believe you’re not married yet!”

“Shouldn’t you be getting a ring soon?”

“Where’s your special someone?”

“Don’t worry. You won’t be single forever.”

“Maybe you should just propose to him.”

These are just the sprinkling of the questions my cousin, Gabby, and I got about a year ago at our cousin, Pierre’s wedding. At the time, I was single, fresh off another failed relationship, and attending the wedding solo, and Gabby was there with her long term boyfriend, Dev.

If you’re anything like us, and an unmarried woman of a certain age, then you’ve almost certainly heard these. The questions. The comments. The verbal assaults about your love life (or lack their of!). On the most important day of someone else’s life, somehow the attention has shifted to you. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t this the couple’s big day? So, what’s a girl to do?

All I ever wanted to do at those kinds of weddings was celebrate the love my dear friend or relative had found, sip some Champagne, and dance until the last dance. Meeting a handsome stranger would have been the icing on my single girl cake. So by the time I arrived at Pierre’s wedding, put on my 16th wedding guest dress, and slid into my black Jimmy Choos, I was about sick of the inquisition and not in the mood for any relatives, or nosy strangers, to be all up in my grill! Particularly about things they know nothing about.

And don’t you know someone tried it. A slightly tipsy older gentleman who is a friend of the family had the audacity to come up to me and dare to utter, “Why didn’t you go out for the bouquet toss, Brandy?” Being reminded of my back-at-square-one-do-not-pass-go-do-not-collect-$200-post-breakup status stung. Needless to say, I was seething, but couldn’t come up with a PG-rated response that could be spoken in front of my grandmother! I simply smiled and said I was deep in conversation with my cousin. He then moved on to Gabby. “He still hasn’t married you yet?” Given she has a few years on me, she may have had more practice in these situations. Gabby quickly quipped, “Your wife hasn’t divorced you yet.” Then, turned back to our conversation with an eye roll.

If that wasn’t enough, there was a moment where Gabby, Dev, and I were taking a break from dancing and sitting at the table. The photographer came by and asked to take a photo. When I scooted over closer to Gabby, the photographer replied, “Oh you want to be in the picture, too?” Ouch.

So, what is it about weddings that make people think that with a cream-colored, calligraphy-lettered invitation comes an open invitation for their probing and prodding into your business? Perhaps it’s misguided good intentions of people who only want for you what they think you deserve. Perhaps it’s this societal notion that to still be single at a certain age is a crime against nature and if you haven’t reached married status you are in some way flawed. Or, perhaps it is some complicated mixture of both.

Regardless of the reason, we need to find a way to address the issue. My theory is that the questions won’t stop until we start providing answers that will halt the line of questioning. I’m going to go with the old standby that honesty is the best policy, whatever that means for you. Be empowered to tell your critics exactly what’s on your mind. Whether it is a witty quip or a statement about the other fabulous facets of your life, let them know.

“So why didn’t you go out for the bouquet toss?”

“I guess I didn’t notice. I was telling someone about my promotion.”

“What about that groomsman? He seems nice.”

“I’m sure he is, but I’m not interested.”

“I can’t believe you’re not married yet!”

“I can’t believe I haven’t traveled to Paris yet!”

“Shouldn’t you be getting a ring soon?”

“We’re in no rush. We’re enjoying this phase of our relationship right now.”

“Where’s your special someone?”

“My special someone is at home. I didn’t think puppies were allowed in the church.”

“Don’t worry. You won’t be single forever.”

“I know. I’m worth the wait.”

“Maybe you should just propose to him.”

“Is that what you did?”

And if that doesn’t work, just exit yourself from the conversation, get a refill on your drink, and find your way back to the dance floor.

I may be in a relationship, but being super single and on the dating scene is not so far removed for me, so I have a lot of empathy for my amazing friends still out there trying to find someone worthy of their awesomeness! Which brings me to a recent scenario…

My friend Nisha hit it off with a guy at a party. They snuck off to a corner and chatted for hours about the things men and women chat about when they are first connecting. (She must have been pretty engrossed in that conversation as she missed my calls and texts that night!) We finally caught up a few days later for the debrief. Inquiring minds wanted to know, after all! I almost fell out of my chair when she told me that, after all those hours of talking, he didn't even ask for her number!

Really? Is this what’s happening now? Is that all there is?

Then I was left speechless (and I'm rarely speechless!) when she said he had the nerve to add her on IG after the fact.

I repeat, really?! Is this what’s happening now? Is that all there is?

This situation begs me to ask: What's become of meeting and greeting in our society? Has technology ruined romance and relationships completely? Are we no longer able to interact in a meaningful capacity? Gone, it seems, are the days of hour-long first phone calls, declarations of feelings on looseleaf paper, and conversations that "define the relationship." Now, we are forced to reckon with the oh-so-not romantic first email, tone-lacking text messages, and a relationship status determined by who first indicates ‘In a Relationship with…’ on their Facebook profile. If we still have one of those! Where'd good old fashioned romance go? I mean, it's kinda hard to woo a woman with only 140 characters, homie!  

I guess it is only happening because, collectively, we’re allowing it. Otherwise, what else would have made that, "man-child" (Nisha's favorite term for a grown man who engages in childish behaviors) think that connecting with her on social media, as opposed to asking their mutual friend for her number, was an okay entry point into her life? I shouldn't be surprised, I guess. In a recent conversation with my friend Meena, she described how she dated a guy for close to a year and probably talked to him on the phone twice! And I'm not exempt myself. I hang my head in shame at the fact that Facebook Messenger messages were a popular communication medium with me and Justin. They frequently trumped phone-on-phone action in our brief, long distance relationship.

That's why when the last guy I met (before my boo!) actually wanted to talk on the phone, I was nervous. I'd gotten so accustomed to the email/text/DM version of courtship that I questioned my own phone skills. Back in the pre-social media era, my skills were sharp. Honed over years of experience. However, getting back into the phone groove was just like riding a bike. It took a few minutes to steady my balance, but once I got the hang of it, it was like I never forgot how to be cute and flirty and witty with my words. Let’s hope this trend continues for Nisha and my other single ladies.

Maybe this all doesn't sound worrisome to you now, but my paranoia strikes when I think about how even intimacy has become technologized. I mean, how are folks ever going to get to mating if they can barely figure out dating? Sexting can be fun, but it doesn’t make babies. (Which maybe isn't such a bad thing for some folks right now...)

So, what's next? Can we make our way back to connecting on an authentic level? I'm a believer. I’ve prioritized it in my own relationship. While FaceTime is an incredible tool, we know "face time" is important to building romance and relationships. After all, no typewritten text of "xoxo" can ever compare to the magic and sparks of real life hugs and kisses. No love tweet, no matter how well crafted, can ever capture the same sentiment of those words when shared over a meal. How do we make this change and avoid being permanently interpersonally challenged? One situation at a time.

Birthday Reflections for ThirtySomething Women from a ThirtySomething Woman

Another year of my life has passed more quickly than I could have imagined and I am approaching yet another birthday as a thirtysomething. As I take advantage of this opportunity to reflect on the past year, this time, I can honestly say that I am not only older, but wiser as well. I have learned so much about myself and am eager to take that knowledge into whatever this year has in store.

I think about where I was a year ago. I was only a few months into my relationship with my boyfriend after years of on-again and off-again nonsense that had impacted my self-worth. In the year before I met him, and honestly, even in the beginning of us getting together, I really had to reach into the depths of my strength, courage, and faith. Since then, and over the past year with him, I’ve found comfort in the safety and trust of our relationship that’s enabled me to appreciate my year and live fully, freely, and fearlessly.

As I reflect on my birthday as a thirtysomething woman, what have I learned that has allowed for this transformation?

Embrace that there are things in life beyond my control. What I can control is my response and make the best choice for me in the situation.

Make the best of the cards I’m dealt. What else can be done with them? If I wait long enough, my next turn will be up again.

It’s okay to be less than perfect. I make mistakes, and so do others. I’ve learned to forgive others, but most of all to forgive myself.

Big girls do cry. Sometimes the beauty of life touches me deeply. Sometimes the reality of life cuts just as deeply. Vulnerability is powerful and what makes me human.

Not everything is worth my tears. I reserve them for the situations and the people worthy of them. Most of the time, life is really not that serious.

Life is short. Every day should be savored, cherished, enjoyed. One minute I’m eighteen, becoming an adult, and in a blink of an eye, I’m a thirtysomething. And even when I try to drag my feet, the current of life continues to push me along, ready or not. Graduations. Jobs. Marriages. Babies. People come. People go. People stay. People leave. People are taken away too soon. Life waits for no one and all I can do is live mine beautifully.

Life is long. Lucky for me, I can’t do it all in one day, one week, one month, or one year. Life gives me time to explore, experiment, make up my mind, change my mind, and do it all again. And that’s okay. Everything happens in its own good time. I relish the time I have to figure it out and to make decisions that I am confident in and can live with.

Life isn’t a race and I’m in no rush. It’s not about the finish line or the destination, but about the milestones and the moments of the journey.

Take risks. The outcomes may not always be what is expected or envisioned. Sometimes they are better.

Not everything has to be planned. Some of the best things in life are unexpected and happen in the spur of the moment.

Some things stay the same. Friendships. Circumstances. Perspectives.

Some things change. Friendships. Circumstances. Perspectives.

But no matter the changes each year brings or how many paths are traveled, it’s good to know there is always a place to call home. A place where family, friends, and love reside.

And through it all, the good, the bad, the constant, the fleeting, the fabulous, the mundane, the successes, the failures, living is a beautiful experience.
