Who is Kayla Love?
Hi! I’m Kayla…well, actually that’s not my real name. That’s my pen name or my nom de plume. You might be saying to yourself, “Well, why is Kayla private about her identity?” Well, given the nature of my day job, I wanted to create a different identity and brand for this part of my life. Maybe one day I’ll pull a Stacey Abrams and reveal to the world who I am, but for now, I prefer to stick to this pseudonym.
What excites me about writing right now?
I have sooo many ideas so I’m excited about developing! I have a few short pieces I’m workshopping, but my next big thing is finishing book 4 of the Bliss Bay series, Ellerie. She’s starting to shape up, but I’m still outlining parts of her journey. Having fun exploring some new territory…
I also have been so inspired by the writing community I’ve formed. I love connecting with other authors, motivating each other, and celebrating each other’s wins.
When do I write?
When I get inspired! Sometimes an idea just burns in my brain until I get it out. If I’m not by my laptop this looks like ideas captured on the Notes app or on scraps of paper.
It can be tough to schedule enough time with a full time job, but because it’s important, I make it work! I have to build time into my busy schedule and often make appointments with myself like I would for a work meeting. Typically, this is in the evening after the work day and dinner when I have the brain space to focus.
Where do I write?
Typically, in my home sitting on my cozy couch! (Although I have been known to cover some serious ground on a flight when I’m not pulled by the usual distractions!)
Why do I write romance?
Well, honestly, I wanted to write some of the happily ever afters life didn’t give me. My characters and I have a lot in common and a lot of the scenarios are loosely based on reality - with some embellishments and adaptations, of course! Beyond that, I wanted to tell more stories of Black women, like me, finding love and living life in a diverse world. While we share so much that I love and appreciate about our culture, we are also not a monolith and I enjoy creating characters and worlds with depth and diversity that reflects my own experiences.
How do I decide what to write?
I think about what stories still need to be told! I love that all my leading ladies are over 30 and that Gabby and Ellerie are in their 40s. In pop culture, Hollywood, and the world, we often prize youth. There’s so much more I’ve experienced and learned as I’ve gotten older, especially over 35. There are unique aspects of dating, mating, and finding love that have more nuance and depth and my goal is to show more of that so that more women can be seen.
